Miss Lisa’s Book Review – Memorial Day

Good day, jungle friends! As we close the month of May, a very important holiday approaches this Monday, Memorial Day. It is a very special time when we honor those who have fought and died for our country. It has been a long standing tradition in America of decorating soldiers graves dating back to even before the Civil War, and was officially proclaimed a national holiday on May 5th, 1868! There is a sense of pride and honor when we think of men and women who gave their lives to protect our country, and Memorial Day is when we can not only spend time with family, (maybe someone you know has served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines!) but think thankfully about soldiers who thought of the good of others before themselves.

Because we are coming upon this time, some great books you can read with your family are Memorial Day Surprise by Theresa Golding and Alexandra Artigas, and The Wall by Eve Bunting and Ronald Himler. Also, you can celebrate and pay your respects as many towns have parades on Memorial Day to celebrate these heroes. I want to strongly recommend an absolutely WONDERFUL book for children called America’s White Table by Margot Theis Raven which talks about the tradition honoring Missing in Action or Prisoner of War soldiers. This is a MUST READ and you will find it very meaningful.

Friends, have a great day with your family this Memorial Day, and take some quiet time to reflect on our soldiers and the wonderful men and women who gave their lives and in turn keep our America safe and GREAT!
