Miss Lisa’s Book Review – Chinese New Year

Hello Friends! We live in a country that is full of culture and celebration. Although we just finished spending time with friends and family on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, believe it or not one culture in our country is just beginning the festivities of CHINESE NEW YEAR! This is an exciting time with family traditions, spectacular parades, and celebrations.

The Chinese Calendar operates in a 12 year cycle with an animal being represented every year. Last year in 2011, for instance was the year of the rabbit. But, since the 2000 millennium, the cycle has come back and this year 2012 is the year of the DRAGON! Starting this Monday on the 23rd, the Chinese New Year celebration is in full swing for 2012, the year of the Dragon. From traditional dishes for families such as pork and cabbage pot stickers to red envelopes with money given to children, this 15 day celebration will be spectacular for sure.

To gain some fun understanding of this holiday, why not check out Celebrating Chinese New Year by Diane Hoyt Goldsmith, Bringing in the New Year by Grace Lin, or Lanterns and Firecrackers: A Chinese New Year Story (Festival Time) by Jonny Zucker and Jan Barger Cohen. We are SO lucky to have the celebration of so many cultures in our own country, I hope this is one you read about and enjoy!

Take care, and until next week, the Chinese New Year celebration continues!

Sincerely,

Miss Lisa
