Miss Lisa’s Book Review – Easter

Hello wonderful friends! How are you doing? I am so excited because here we are with another wonderful spring holiday…Easter! Maybe you are going on an egg hunt, spending quality time with family, or enjoying the wonderful weather. I’m sure as you go to the store, go about town, you can see decorations and wonderful colors that speak of the season.

One theme we see through Easter is bright colored eggs, so in keeping with this tradition…our stories are about eggs! Eggs serve a variety of purposes…and during the Easter season we love to color and decorate them. However, some friends DON’T have a peaceful agenda with our roly poly friend…but a really devious one!

So check out The Perfect Nest by John Manders and Catherine Friend. This is the CRAZY tale of Jack the Cat who builds the perfect nest to attract eggs, but not to color them! This story will have you in stitches! Also, Foxy and the Egg by Alex T. Smith is a “yolk” of a tale (yes, there was a pun intended!) of an unsuspecting egg that happened to roll up to Foxy DuBois’s door for a fateful visit…but you’ll never guess who for!

Have an awesome Easter, friends, filled with wonderful family time, and also make sure to enjoy your spring break…with some good books!

Sincerely,

Miss Lisa

Miss Lisa’s Book Review – Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Here we are in the last week of March, who knew? The time is going fast and we are approaching a full spring with plenty of nice weather, then cold weather, some rain, maybe some…dare I say it, snow? You never know!

Spring is a time for really crazy weather! You never know what it will do on a given day. Just like the song, “If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops, oh what a rain that would be!” Do you remember the next part? “I’d stand outside with my mouth open wide, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah…” I wanted to recommend a few books that tie in the weather with some really crazy things! It is the time of year right?

So you absolutely MUST check out Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. In this crazy tale, the town of Chewandswallow is explored, and talk about THEIR weather! You will laugh, and I think never look up at the sky the same again! And, if you loved it, then check out the sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh! Maybe, you could even sit with your family and come up with a tall bedtime tale of your own, just like Grandpa in the story! Great stories are not limited to inside the pages of books, but here’s hoping YOU enjoy this recommended book and have a great week!

Don’t forget your umbrella!

Sincerely,

Miss Lisa

Miss Lisa’s Book Review – One

Haven’t you absolutely ENJOYED this unreasonably warm weather! And now, with the first day of spring past us, we will notice many wonderful changes. People say spring is the season of newness, starting anew, “waking up to the world” after the “sleep of winter,” and I am inclined to believe them.

So this week we are going to reflect on starting some new things. New “thoughts” about ourselves, actually. Have you ever thought about how SPECIAL you really are? Think about it: there is absolutely NO ONE in the world who is just like you! Your hair, your eyes, your smile, your talents, all these things make who you are — pretty special! And I want YOU to always think that way. You are special; there is no one else like you; you are original; you are an amazing creation.

This week’s story is a wonderful reminder of that, even when other people don’t make us feel that way! One by Kathryn Otoshi is a MUST have for every children’s home library. It is the story of the color blue, and how he feels about himself. There is conflict that is resolved when all the colors find help through a special friend. It shows an absolutely wonderful truth in a creative way; no wonder this book has won many awards! Parents—a great read even for the preschooler in your lap and can provide wonderful discussion time with your children. It will remind them, and give YOU a chance to remind them, of how special they really are!

Have a great week!

Miss Lisa’s Book Review – Planting a Rainbow

One more week and counting…till that wonderful first day of spring! The change of seasons is really fascinating, as we see many plants starting to grow, trees starting to bud, and can you hear that? I listened outside very early in the morning and heard the birds chirping! When you hear that, it is a sign for SURE that SPRING IS ON THE WAY!

Many people see spring as a sign to start some new things, and one that we are currently doing in Miss Lisa’s Storytime is learning how things grow. At the end of January, we planted SEEDS in dirt cups: covered them up, added some water, and put the tray of them in a nice sunny window…and watched and waited. Guess what those flower seeds did? Of course…THEY SPROUTED! In six weeks following, those sprouts have now become little growing plants.

In the story Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, the magic of sprouts, seeds, and bulbs combined with the warm ground of spring set a beautiful array of color in motion. Growing Vegetable Soup by the same author (Lois Ehlert) explores the planting of vegetables through seeds and sprouts to make a yummy healthy treat.

So, why not try something new this spring? Check out these wonderful books, which are a great read for beginning readers, very bright and colorful, and maybe it will inspire YOU to plant some seeds of your own, with a parent’s help of course. By outside flower planting time, (May in Ohio) you could have some great little flower plants to enjoy, and learn how things grow in the process!

Sincerely,

Miss Lisa
